Eleanora Bryce is a middle-aged widow who lives in the slums of Bridges, Spadros quadrant, just a few blocks outside of the Pot.
She has two living sons: David (age 12) and Herbert (age 16), and owns a fabric store in a building on 2nd Street which used to be a small grocery. She and her sons live in the back room of the building, and the business does not appear to be very profitable.
The main character and narrator of The Jacq of Spades, Mrs. Jacqueline Spadros, has known Eleanora Bryce all her life, yet has not seen her for ten years. At first, Jacqui seems to be afraid of her, but we don’t know why.
Where did Eleanora go? Why did she return? And who has kidnapped her son David?
